Mike Sowerwine Scholarship Fund
In Memory of Mike Sowerwine.
Frank Michael “Mike” Sowerwine was a longtime supporter of Bay Oaks and East Bay United. For over a decade, Mike committed his weekends to the club as a parent and volunteered many more hours to the club in various roles. His involvement with the club began in 2007, when his son Owen joined Bay Oaks. From 2007 to 2011 Mike was the treasurer for Bay Oaks, before filling the treasurer position for the Jack London Youth Soccer League, which he served from 2011 to 2018. Mike’s involvement didn’t stop there; on weekends he wasn’t traveling to watch a match or attend a tournament, you could see him refereeing across the East Bay with his yellow jersey and whistle.
In December 2017, Mike was diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as ALS. In the years following his diagnosis, Mike dedicated his time to increasing awareness of ALS and progressing the search for a cure. He helped fund critical research and development of treatments for people living with ALS and for caregivers and family members of those affected by the disease. Mike supported
The ALS Therapy Development Institute and the
ALS Network, two organizations leading the effort to develop effective therapies for those living with ALS.
Mike passed in November 2022, but his legacy lives on. In addition to his support of ALS-based causes, Mike wanted to give back to the East Bay United community by supporting the club’s financial aid program. In Mike’s memory and with the support of his wife Amy and son Owen, EBU created The Mike Sowerwine Scholarship Fund, a fund dedicated to support our community
